What's wrong with my GMC Savana Van transmission?

The 2024 GMC Savana, and previous model years of the van, is offered in several configurations, including the GMC Savana Cargo, the GMC Savana Passenger and the GMC Savana Cutaway, each of which is designed to serve a specific purpose. Previously, the 8-speed automatic transmission tagged with RPO code M5U was paired with the naturally aspirated 4.3L V6 LV1 gasoline engine rated at 276 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 298 pound-feet of torque at 3,900 rpm.

The LV1 engine is standard in all GMC Savana Passenger and Cargo configurations as well as in the GMC Savana 3500 Cutaway with the 139-inch wheelbase. The M5U transmission for this engine will now be replaced with the 8-speed automatic transmission tagged with RPO code MTH in the 2024 GMC Savana.

The Chevy Express and GMC Savana, are being investigated by the NHTSA in response to five alleged transmission failures. The investigation is looking specifically at cutaway Chevy Express and GMC Savana models equipped with the GM Hydra-Matic 6L90 MYD transmission, a six-speed, fuel-saving, electronically controlled automatic transmission for RWD and AWD.

Meanwhile, the 6-speed heavy-duty automatic transmission tagged with RPO code MYD was formerly paired with the naturally aspirated 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine, which develops 401 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 464 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm

Frequently, Savana owners complain of:

Hard shifting – owners claim that the vehicle shifts so rough that it almost feels like they have purchased a used vehicle rather than new.

Trouble downshifting – many buyers purchased the Express to use for towing or carrying multiple passengers, which implies a heavy load.

Sudden jerking – newer vehicle owners have complained about this issue, especially when the vehicle is cold first thing in the morning. The jerking has even effected some Escalades with low mileage.

If you live in Sacramento and are having these problems with your GMC Savana van, bring it into our shop and let us determine exactly what's going on. We can get your transmission fixed and put you back on the road!
